SW 72nd Ave Corridor

Making “The Ave” — Improving SW 72nd Avenue for Everyone

Update: 72nd Avenue Pre-Design is starting!

The 72nd Avenue pre-design project will build on the preferred plan from the Corridor Study. It will include a future crossing for the Red Rock Creek Trail and will follow a "complete street" design. This means safer and continuous bike and pedestrian routes, including sidewalks, protected bike lanes (cycle tracks), on-street parking, and bus stops.

Project Overview

“The Ave” project will completely rebuild SW 72nd Avenue between Highway 99 and Highway 217, the main street in the Tigard Triangle. This area has been the focus of planning efforts to improve transportation and promote development. The project aims to improve safety and mobility, supporting mixed-use and affordable housing, walking, biking, and reducing pollution.

The project will make it easier to get around the Tigard Triangle while improving safety for residents, workers, and businesses. The Tigard Triangle is a federally designated Area of Persistent Poverty and Historically Disadvantaged Community, and better transportation options are needed here.

72nd Avenue Corridor Study

The 72nd Avenue Corridor Study, completed in 2020, created a vision for the street.  The design will include sidewalks, protected bike lanes, and landscaping.  Vehicle lanes, parking, and bus stops will vary along the corridor.

The study split the project into two parts:

  • Phase 1: North section (Highway 99 to Dartmouth Street)
  • Phase 2: South section (Dartmouth Street to Highway 217)

Next Steps

The City of Tigard is actively pursuing grant funding for the design, engineering, and construction of Phase 1 of The Ave project.  The estimated cost for Phase 1 improvements is approximately $25 million. The concept design will be used to help the City pursue grant funding and coordinate with upcoming projects, including the Red Rock Creek Trail and development frontage improvements.

 The Tigard Triangle

The Tigard Triangle Strategic Plan (TTSP), adopted in 2015, envisions a lively, walkable area where people can live and work close to shops, restaurants, and parks. In 2017, the city rezoned much of the land to support mixed-use development. New zoning and development rules are in place to support this vision, including specific transportation standards for the area.  The redesign of SW 72nd Avenue is a major step towards the vision of a vibrant and safe community in the Tigard Triangle.
