2025 Juneteenth Celebration

Importance of Juneteenth

Juneteenth, recognized every year on June 19, commemorates the end of over 400 years of enslavement of African American people in the United States. It recognizes that many people in Texas were still enslaved after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, as knowledge of the Proclamation was deliberately kept from them. Enslaved people continued to endure cruel, inhumane treatment, and exploitation.

Juneteenth provides an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of Black Americans through determination, perseverance and greater opportunity and to acknowledge that the struggle for equality continues.

Today and every day, we celebrate the countless contributions Black Americans have made in Tigard, our region, and our country. We as a country have taken some steps towards change, but we know much more work remains.
