Murdock Street is a narrow neighborhood street with little to no shoulder space along most of the roadway. Steep drainage ditches line the road in some spots, making walking space very limited. The City of Tigard desires to create a safe route along Murdock Street for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Construction Update - 7/2/2025

In May, SLE, Inc. began work on the Murdock Street Project and SRTS: Templeton-Twality Improvements to improve road safety for all users with new sidewalks and pedestrian crossings.

What you can expect:

Work hours will be Mon. - Fri., 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional Saturday work is possible.
Construction noise during work hours.
Construction vehicles/equipment accessing the work area
Pride Disposal will begin their routes on Murdock Street at 5 a.m. This change will remain in effect for the duration of the project.

Detour Route:

A detour route has been established to assist with moving traffic through the work area. The detour is expected to remain through October 2025. Click here to review the detour route.

Revised Schedule:

Construction: June 2025 through Fall 2025
*Construction near the middle and elementary schools (below 100th Ave) will start once the school year has ended to limit impacts on students getting to school.

Q:How did you choose which side of the road to put the sidewalk on?
We walked the roadway and looked at the side that would require the least amount of work to match in with existing driveways and ease of constructability. This was determined to be the north side of Murdock Street.
Q:How will mail be delivered during construction, as it looks like the street expansion will eliminate our current box?
Existing mail boxes will be set with temporary/movable anchors. Contractors will set the mailboxes out so mail carriers can deliver and pick up mail. The postal service is notified of the change to delivery/pickup prior to the start of construction.

Mailboxes will be placed on new posts and installed behind curb (just inside of the sidewalk) prior to completion of the work.
Q:There are a lot of mature trees along the roadway. How will they be impacted during construction?
If the trees are within the shared use path, they will be removed. If they are within the grading limits of the work, they will be evaluated for survivability. Removed trees will be replaced on a one-to-one basis. Replacement trees will be selected from the approved street tree list found in the Urban Forestry Manual.
Q:What are the traffic impacts going to be like?
Building stormwater infrastructure and the shared use path will likely require one-way travel and flagging within the work area. This will create short term traffic delays along Murdock Street and side streets. If a full road closure is required, a detour route will be established to direct vehicles around the work area.
Q:When will the sidewalk project start?
Construction is expected to start in June 2023 and be completed by December 2023.
Q:Why a shared use path instead of a bike lane and sidewalk?
A shared use path can accommodate two-way travel, whereas a bike lane and sidewalk on the north side would only accommodate one direction of travel. With the proximity to the school, the ability to provide a safe, grade separated facility for both directions of travel is imperative
Q:Why put sidewalk on only one side of the street?
The project will be funded by gas tax and the estimated construction costs will limit the improvements to one side of the road.
Q:Will my driveway be blocked during construction?
When the shared use path is constructed across your driveway, common practice is to build half of the driveway approach at a time to maintain access to the property.

News Feed

Beginning the week of February 28, 2022, the city’s consultants, AKS Engineering & Forestry, LLC will conduct survey work in your neighborhood. AKS will be performing a topographic and boundary survey in the right of way along the frontage of your property.

In accordance with ORS 672.047, Right of Entry by Land Surveyor, our consultant team may need to enter your property to complete the survey. Multiple visits may be necessary for our team to accomplish the required work, and this survey may last up to 45 days. An Entry Notification was mailed to adjacent property owners with additional information.

This survey work is part of the Murdock Street Sidewalk Improvements project, which will provide future sidewalk, bike lane, and drainage improvements between SW 103rd Avenue and Templeton Elementary School. Improvements are planned to be constructed between Summer and Fall 2023.

What the consultants will be doing:

Surveying the existing roadway, driveways, vegetation, and structures along the frontage of your property.

What you can expect:

Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 AM - 5 PM. Consultants will be visiting the site at various times within this timeframe.
