McDonald Steet Improvements Open House Recap

Post Date:May 03, 2026 9:25 PM

The City of Tigard conducted its second open house for the McDonald Street Improvements project to share early design concepts, answer questions, and gather feedback from community members. The project is designed to make McDonald Street safer and more welcoming for everyone—regardless of their mode of transportation.

The open house was held on March 11, 2026, at the Public Works Building from 5:00pm – 7:00pm. Eight members of the project team (comprised of consultant and City staff) were available to answer questions. The open house was well attended with approximately fifty-eight community members participating. Granola bars and bottled water were available for attendees

Open House Engagement

At the open house, early design concepts for the preferred design alternative were shown. The preferred design includes roundabouts, a shared-use path on both sides (Alternative 2), and other traffic calming and safety features.
Participants were provided multiple opportunities to view early design concepts, learn about the evaluation criteria, ask questions, and give feedback to the project team. Supporting engagement materials included:

  • a video of proposed early design concepts
  • display boards showing before and after concepts for five key intersections: 93rd Avenue, 97th Avenue, Omara Street/98th Avenue,100th Avenue, and 103rd Avenue
  • display boards showing pros and cons of the different alternatives
  • roll maps comparing the design alternatives
  • a to-scale floor map of the shared-use path design alternative
  • fact sheets and comment card

A room was also set aside for property owners to meet with project team members to ask questions related to their specific properties.

At the McDonald Street Improvements Open House participants had the opportunity to interact with the project team members, ask questions, and provide feedback on the early design concepts.

Highlights of Comments and Questions

Common Comments

  • Participants expressed general support for the proposed safety improvements.
  • Many participants were positive about the roundabouts and liked the smaller footprint and traffic calming aspects of the roundabouts.
  • Many participants supported the shared-use path and its smaller footprint.
  • Many participants expressed appreciation for the attention given to reduce the impact on neighborhood properties. A few still voiced concern about the impact on properties with the shared use path.
  • Some participants had concerns about people understanding how to use roundabouts. There were suggestions to provide education for community members about how to use roundabouts.
  • Some expressed concern about traffic and noise during construction and what would be done to reduce the impact on neighbors.
  • Vegetation, landscaping, and visibility were important to some community members, with suggestions to use native, non-invasive, and smaller plants.
  • Reducing speed and improving cyclist and pedestrian safety continue to be a priority for participants.

Common Questions

  • Why was the preferred alternative chosen?
  • What is being done about congestion on Hall Boulevard? It is continually backed up. This project doesn’t address it.
  • What type of landscaping will be done in association with the project? Suggestions to include native plants and to make sure that trees planted would not obstruct views or become overgrown and too big.
  • What are the standard widths of the sidewalks? How wide are the lanes now?
  • What will the impact be on properties along McDonald Street?
  • When will construction start? What will the impact be on residents and traffic along the street during construction? What will be done to ease this?
  • Are the utilities being undergrounded?
  • How is the project funded?
  • Will anything be done at the intersection of 99W and McDonald Street? What can be done now to improve safety for cyclists before this project is done?
