This project provides funding to replace traffic signal equipment that is outdated, poorly operating, or near failure. Work will include items such as signal head upgrades, controller cabinets and appurtenances, functionality upgrades such as new controllers and detection for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Project scope may also include sidewalk and pavement improvements to meet Americans with Disability Act requirements and improve safety.

WHY IT’S NEEDED: The city has a large amount of deferred signal maintenance at the traffic signals it owns and operates. Many of our existing traffic signal components are outdated and replacement parts are not available. This fund will be used to upgrade deficient equipment and improve functionality of our traffic signal system.  

STRATEGIC PLAN TIE-IN: This project supports the goal to provide “an equitable community that is walkable, healthy and accessible for everyone.” In addition, it supports the goal to create a well-connected, attractive and accessible pedestrian network. The project will also allow the city to provide much-needed maintenance to our traffic and transportation system to ensure we can meet traffic-control needs throughout the city.

FUNDING SOURCE: Gas Tax Fund

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE COSTS: The upgrades will reduce overall maintenance costs by increasing equipment efficiency.
