Project Description

This project will allow over a half-mile of aging 12-inch waterline located in Red Rock Creek to be decommissioned and properly abandoned. The project will also provide new domestic and fire service lines to properties served from the water main between Hunziker and the Portland and Western Railroad right of way.

The new service lines on the south side of the creek were installed with the Hunziker Core: Wall Street Infrastructure Improvements project (phase 1 completed in 2018). Improvements on the north side of the creek are to occur before decommissioning of the existing water main and will be coordinated with future transit projects.

In addition, the original project scope has been revised to include an extension of a 12-inch waterline at the western terminus of Tech Center Drive, connecting to the existing 12-inch waterline at the northern end of Milton Court.

WHY IT’S NEEDED: The existing 12-inch waterline is largely located in the creek bed with little to no pipe cover. These conditions present a vulnerability to main breaks and create difficult access for maintenance or emergency repairs.

The new 12-inch waterline in Wall Street provides a cost-effective and safe means to serve existing and future development within the Hunziker Core area. The Tech Center Drive/Milton Court water main extension will connect existing 12-inch waterlines within Tech Center Drive and Milton Court, which will remove two dead-end lines and create a system loop, providing  improved water quality and increased fire protection for existing and future service connections supplied by these water mains.

STRATEGIC PLAN TIE-IN: This project protects core services, provides system efficiency, and protects community health. In addition, decommissioning the existing 12-inch waterline will provide protection to the creek bed and banks.

TIMELINE: FY16 through future (end of project coordinated with potential future transit project).

FUNDING SOURCE: Water Fund

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE COSTS: None
