Eight community members joined Mayor Yi-Kang Hu for an informal Meet Up with the Mayor on Saturday, August 8, at Whole Foods on Scholls Ferry Road. The conversation covered a variety of local topics, with attendees sharing questions, concerns, and ideas.

A small business owner and two other attendees had questions about the regulations and permitting process for operating mobile food carts at or near a City park. The conversation focused on how the City’s current rules apply and whether there may be a way to make mobile food cart operations possible in local parks, noting the positive response from the surrounding neighborhood.

Housing density was another topic of conversation. Mayor Hu shared that, while the City has a role in shaping local development regulations, much of what determines housing types and density is driven by state and regional requirements. He explained that the City works within those broader requirements while setting local standards for things such as accessory dwelling units, lot coverage, and building height. The Summer Creek Bridge was another area of interest, with questions and concerns about ongoing work. Follow-up information will be provided to help address the questions raised. Learn more about Summer Creek projects.

Utility billing was also discussed, with a community member sharing concerns about issues they have experienced with the autopay feature and updating their credit card information. Follow-up will include connecting with the Utility Billing team to better understand the issue and reaching back out to the community member.

Fifteen community members joined Mayor Yi-Kang Hu for July's Meet Up with the Mayor at Beach Hut Deli, making it one of the largest gatherings yet.

The conversation focused on a variety of topics important to the community, with significant discussion around pedestrian safety and accessibility. Attendees shared concerns about the need for additional sidewalks throughout Tigard, as well as damaged and uneven sidewalks that can create hazardous conditions, particularly for people using mobility devices. Staff explained sidewalk maintenance responsibilities and directed residents to the city's sidewalk web page to learn more or report code violations, providing direct contact alternatives for residents facing online barriers.

Community members also asked questions about a recent residential water testing effort, including how participants were selected and whether the results of the testing will be shared more broadly. Learn more about the Water Service Line Inventory Project.

Another attendee shared ideas for strengthening community connections and improving access to healthcare, and Mayor Hu connected them with staff and community contacts to continue the conversation.

The discussion concluded with questions about the costs and financing challenges associated with middle housing development and subdivision platting, providing an opportunity to better explain the development process and hear community perspectives.

The June Meet Up brought six community members to the Tigard Library to chat with Mayor Hu. 

Topics of discussion included:

A community member who was looking for more information about a previous inquiry with staff about tree removal.

A discussion regarding the closure of the Universal Plaza splash pad and the community disappointment surrounding it. The community member inquired about potential temporary alternatives to fill the summer gap, with suggestions such as portable splash pads or organized outdoor aquatic events.

A resident urging council to consider the River Terrace 2.0 code to include a wider range of housing types and price points, concerned that the market alone will only build large, expensive homes that many community members cannot afford.

A participant who supported the PD/PW bond measure expressed disappointment over the outcome and offered suggestions for improvements for future public materials to help build stronger community support.

Discussion on a community member's concerns regarding a high concentration of adult care facilities, group homes, and a potential Airbnb operating on a single neighborhood street.

Continued advocacy from a resident and his wife regarding ongoing code violations on a neighboring property, specifically highlighting issues with accumulated manure and related rodent infestations. Residents can review the City of Tigard Code or submit a report directly through the Tigard Service Request portal.

A thoughtful conversation on the critical need for more family-focused shelters and improved access to these facilities, which expanded into a group discussion about localized, small-scale transportation options.

Three community members joined Mayor Yi-Kang Hu and members of the Budget Team for an informal “Meet Up with the Mayor" on Thursday, April 30, sharing questions and ideas on a range of local topics.

Topics of interest included:

Discussion on the proposed roundabouts on McDonald St and the importance of people showing up and getting involved.

Continued discussion from a community member's previous input at a Meet Up about opportunities to increase revenue and his idea of a National Energy Efficiency Development Institute.

A young community member from a local Boy Scout Troup asked questions about the mayor's experience as Mayor. He also shared his concerns about more peer programs within TTSD for recycling and possibly having an incentive program to reduce trash. He was interested to hear more about Parks going in at the old Cinema site as he stated there were not enough in that area.

Interest on River Terrace 2.0 costs
Participants asked about water-related expenses tied to the River Terrace 2.0 project and expressed interest in clearer, more publicly accessible cost information—similar to what has been shared for the proposed Police/Public Works facility.

Opportunities to strengthen community communication
One participant suggested a “neighborhood ambassador” model to help keep residents informed and engaged across the city. The Committee for Community Engagement (CCE) was noted as a potential starting point.

Discussion included Downtown Reimagined efforts, with interest in future possibilities if sites like the post office become available. A participant also highlighted the potential for Tigard to become a food cart pod destination to support community vibrancy.

Community partnership and upcoming food donations
Representatives from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shared plans for a Giving Machine recognition event and an upcoming large food donation to support Tigard-area pantries this summer.
