Small Business Development
Tigard’s commitment to supporting small businesses has been steadily growing over the last few years.
In 2017 the city introduced its new 10 Steps to Starting a Small Business: A Resource Guide for Tigard Entrepreneur. The guide, available in both English and Spanish, provides resources for would-be entrepreneurs starting a small business and is complemented by a new webpage that includes local, state and federal resources for Tigard residents with big dreams.
The webpage also includes a section specifically geared toward women- and minority-owned businesses in hopes to help spur entrepreneurism in underrepresented segments of the business community.
"Tigard's economic diversity can be seen in the types of companies that move here and expand existing operations," said Dylan Dekay-Bemis, Tigard's economic development coordinator. "We want to make it easier for firms to access the tools they need throughout their life cycle; this guide clearly and concisely outlines the steps to start a business in Tigard, and keep it thriving."
Without additional funding, however, Tigard’s ability to assist small businesses may be significantly reduced, and the growth the city has experienced could lose momentum.
With sufficient funding, Tigard could continue to provide the individual outreach that helps small businesses succeed and create more jobs in the process.
