The week-long camps are offered to 4th, 5th

reinforcing the importance of staying drug and violence free. Goals of the camps include
fostering self-esteem, cooperation and patience, and teaching goal-setting and team-building
skills. Download the brochure for additional details.

Community donations and grants help fund the summer camp program. To continue to make the
camps a success, the police department is seeking the following:
- Food donations for 50 kids – lunches, granola bars, fruit snacks, chips, cookies, pop, etc.
- High school counselor volunteers - applications are available at the Tigard Police Department
- Adult volunteers
- Cash donations
Without community support, this valuable program would not be
available for Tigard's youth. For more information, contact Officer Sheryl Huiras at
503-718-2578.

D.A.R.E. Program
D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The D.A.R.E.
Program is a seventeen-week program taught by Tigard Police Officers. This program is
targeted at fifth grade students, and is taught in five Tigard elementary schools.
The D.A.R.E. lessons focus on four major areas:
- Providing accurate information about drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
- Teaching students good decision-making skills.
- Showing students how to recognize and resist peer pressure.
- Giving students ideas for positive alternative to drug use.
D.A.R.E. officers work with children to raise their self-esteem;
encourage them to make their own decisions; show them how to cope with their problems
in a positive way; and encourage them to get involved in positive activities instead of
doing drugs.
Tigard Police Department has been teaching D.A.R.E. since 1990. We currently have
two officers who teach the program. The D.A.R.E. program is funded through community
donations, grants, and fundraising throughout the year.
We also have a D.A.R.E. Summer Camp program, which provides positive activities during
the summer months for kids. Each summer camp consists of educational classes in which
they learn conflict resolution, goal setting, healthy self-image, career exploration, and
communication skills. They participate in recreational activities such as swimming,
volleyball, basketball, softball, and other team building games. Summer camp provides
positive relationships with adults and builds their self-esteem. We show the kids they
can have a great time without drugs!!!
