D.A.R.E. Program—Since 1990
D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The D.A.R.E.
Program is a ten-week program taught by four Tigard Police Officers.
The program is targeted at fifth grade students and is taught in five Tigard elementary schools.
The D.A.R.E. lessons focus on four major areas:
- Providing accurate information about drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
- Teaching students good decision-making skills.
- Showing students how to recognize and resist peer pressure.
- Giving students ideas for positive alternative to drug use.
D.A.R.E. officers work with children to raise their self-esteem;
encourage them to make their own decisions; show them how to cope with their problems
in a positive way; and encourage them to get involved in positive activities instead of
doing drugs.
We also have a D.A.R.E. Summer Camp program, which provides positive activities during
the summer months for kids. Each summer camp consists of educational classes in which
they learn conflict resolution, goal setting, healthy self-image, career exploration, and
communication skills. They participate in recreational activities such as swimming,
volleyball, basketball, softball, and other team building games. Summer camp provides
positive relationships with adults and builds their self-esteem. We show the kids they
can have a great time without drugs!!!
