Methods to help reduce speed in "your" neighborhood:
Speed
Monitoring Trailer
The Tigard Police Department operates a speed monitoring trailer which
advises and educates motorists of the speed their vehicle is travelling, while also
displaying the speed appropriate to that area.
This tool has been highly effective in helping to
reduce the speeds of vehicles travelling in residential neighborhoods, school zones and
also on heavily used streets in Tigard that tend to invite "cut-through" traffic.
The speed awareness trailer serves to remind motorists the importance of reducing speed in
efforts to maintain a safe and livable community.
Neighborhood Speed Watch
The Tigard Police Department sponsors a proactive approach to help reduce speeds throughout
Tigard neighborhoods.
With the assistance of Tigard residents, under the direction of the Tigard Police,
training and equipment are provided to monitor the speed on residential streets.
A police radar unit and portable speed "reader" board are set up and implemented by
volunteer residents.
The primary purpose is to promote motorists to drive at or below the maximum speed
limits posted. The volunteers record the information pertaining to those vehicles
observed travelling in excess of the posted speed limit.
This information is then provided to the Tigard Police, who will locate the registered owner of the vehicle. A courtesy
notice is then sent to the alleged violator.
This partnership in the community with both police and citizens helps strengthen the
common goals to make a safer Tigard.
