The Tigard Police Department sponsors a Police Explorer Program for high school and
college students 16-20 years of age. This program is a non-paid, volunteer position
working within the police department. The program allows participants to experience
life in law enforcement and to see how the police department assists the community.
The experiences gained through this program enable participants to better determine
if a career in law enforcement is something they would like to pursue.
Explorers attend a scaled back version of a Police Academy where they learn about
Oregon law and law enforcement practices. Explorers must graduate from this academy
to continue involvement in the program. After graduating from the academy, Explorers
must work a minimum number of hours (12) per month. Required hours can be obtained
through department sponsored training, attending monthly Explorer meetings, assisting
at community events and going with patrol officers on ride-a-longs.
Explorer training includes firearms, defensive tactics, force on force, vehicle stops
and building searches. Explorers also have an opportunity to participate in the
annual Law Enforcement Challenge (LEC) where they compete in various events against
other Explorers/Cadets from around the state. 2009 marked the first year Tigard
Explorers participated in the LEC and we look forward to participating again
in the future.
Even though Explorers work within the police department, they are not sworn police
officers and they have no peace-officer authority. They wear department-specified
uniforms and required equipment (all maintained by the Explorer).
