Tigard Police K-9 Program
K9 or K-9 is an abbreviation and homophone of Canine. It may refer to a variety of entries, most related to dogs.
The term originated in the military. The term, originally referencing war dogs, has since carried over to police,
sentry and assistance dogs.
Tigard Police K-9, Baxter, was bred in Europe. Prior to Tigard Police selecting Baxter, several other dogs were considered, but for various reasons did not meet the standards for acceptance. Baxter is a male, pure bred German Shepherd with roots
to the Czech Republic.
Currently, Officer Cameron Odam is Baxter's appointed handler. On a daily basis, Officer Odam works with Baxter to mold him into the best possible police tracking dog. Baxter has always received high marks for his natural instincts and abilities. It is imperative for a handler to be in precise sync with his canine mate. Officer Odam and Baxter have demonstrated good success to date with multiple suspect locates and apprehensions. Considering the young age of Baxter and his quickly developing keen abilities, we can only expect greater things from him.
Stay tuned.
K-9s are considered an important component in the continued efforts for a community to remain competitive in the fight to reduce crime. The added ability for tracking, delaying and locating suspects involved in crimes can prove to be invaluable to a police department. Tigard Police is proud of its K-9 program and continually strives to provide the best possible service and maintain the safety for citizens.
