Commercial Crimes Unit Almost 3,200 Tigard area businesses are investing in a new approach to fighting crime. Earlier this year Tigard City Council authorized a redesigned Business License Fee to take effect January 1, 2008. Existing businesses will pay the restructured fee when they renew their business license. The restructured rate tier allows Tigard Police to form a new unit dedicated to businesses - the "Commercial Crimes Unit." Tigard Police Department crime data revealed that retail and industrial areas spawned 46 percent of all reported crime in 2006. Tigard Police Chief Bill Dickinson and his staff proposed a radical new way to pay for urgently needed help to Tigard's retail and commercial community. The redesigned fee is the result of months of planning and citizen input. It provides revenue for police and business owners to address crime trends and crime fighting. The three-member police unit will team with merchants to stop crime before it happens and develop criminal data to help investigation of criminal issues unique to the business community - something impossible until now. Simply put, this program puts help directly where it's needed. Merchants approved the change in fees when they learned it would fund a team dedicated to their needs. This is the first increase in Tigard's Business License program in 20 years. Tigard's thriving businesses climate has grown as well as opportunity for crime unique to business. Tigard Police are confident the newly created Commercial Crimes Unit will help Tigard businesses prosper and reduce the opportunity for crime and its negative impact.
