Alarm Permit FAQs

Q. Do I need an alarm permit if I do not have an alarm company monitoring my alarm system?
A. If you have an alarm system that is functional and activated, the alarm ordinance requires you to obtain a valid alarm user permit.

Q. I have a medical/fire alarm, do I need an alarm permit?
A. No. An alarm user permit is required for burglary alarms only.

Q. How much is the annual alarm permit fee?
A. $25.00 annually. No refund of a permit renewal fee will be made.

Q. Are there any alarm permit fee exemptions?
A. Yes, if you are a government agency or if you are a resident of Tigard 60 and over.

Q. Will I be notified when my permit is going to expire?
A. A renewal form and invoice will be mailed to you a month before your permit expires.

Q. If I am exempt do I need to send anything back to renew?
A. Yes, the alarm renewal form needs to be sent back with any changes.

Q. Are there charges for false alarms?
A. Yes. If you have 3 or more false alarms in a permit year the charge begins at $50.00 and increases incrementally with each false alarm. After 4 false alarms police may end response. Please see Alarm Permit Fees.

Q. Where can I obtain a copy of the City of Tigard Alarm Ordinance?
A. The alarm ordinance can be found online or for a hard copy, call Alarm Administration at 503-718-2565.
