Recent OLCC Compliance Checks Conducted in Tigard Five out of 30 businesses visited in Tigard on November 4, 2011 failed to pass an OLCC check for alcohol sales to minors. The Tigard Police Department assisted the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) with this effort. A team of OLCC inspectors along with two Tigard Police Officers accompanying an eighteen year-old male volunteer, visited the selected establishments. Oregon Administrative Rules strictly set guidelines for the OLCC regarding such random and unannounced checks at businesses selling alcohol. Random checks are conducted periodically to ascertain compliance regarding the sale of alcohol to minors. Compliance checks may also be initiated based on complaints lodged with the OLCC or local law enforcement. This recent alcohol sales check in Tigard yielded 83 percent compliance which is slightly above the statewide average of 80 percent. Prior to the most recent check, compliance rates in Tigard have peaked as high as 97 percent (2010) and also drew dismal compliance figures as low as 30 percent (2009). The Tigard Police Department plans to continue its efforts to reduce the sale of alcohol to minors in Tigard. One way police are working to combat the problem of underage drinking is to partner with coalitions that help educate and support our community’s youth in efforts to promote healthy and substance-free lifestyles. Tigard Turns the Tide is one example. You can learn more about this community coalition at www.tigardturnsthetide.org. In addition, police plan on continued enforcement and additional compliance checks to reaffirm the importance to affected businesses that the sale of alcohol to minors will not be tolerated. |
