Tigard Celebrates 50 Years as CitySeptember 11, 1961 - September 11, 2011 The City of Tigard is celebrating its 50th year of incorporation on September 11, 2011. In honor of this milestone, we're serving up free birthday cake and a swingin' concert by the Woody Hite Big Band on Sunday, September 11 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Tigard Library Community Room (13500 SW Hall Blvd.). Mayor Dirksen and Curtis Tigard (the 102-year old grandson of city founders Wilson and Mary Ann Tigard) will offer remarks at 2:30 p.m., followed by a free performance by the Woody Hite Big Band. These musicians formed in the 1930s during the Big Band craze and went on to become one of the most popular Big Bands in the Pacific NW in the late '30s-'40s. They disbanded in WWII when a lot of the members went off to war and re-formed in 1971 and have been performing ever since. And although it's the city's birthday, library cardholders get the present. Thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Tigard Library, library patrons can pick up a complimentary copy of The Right Stuff while supplies last. This popular book by Tom Wolfe chronicles the nation's first astronauts and the historic Mercury space program that resulted in six manned missions between 1961 and 1963. City officials are asking residents to share their Tigard memories in words and pictures to mark the occasion. Blank paper will be available at the event to capture recollections of the city we call home. The stories and images will produce a historical snapshot of the event. If you can't attend, please send us your tales from Tigard! Mail your memories on 8 ½ x 11 paper to Liz Newton at City Hall, 13125 SW Hall Blvd., Tigard, OR 97223 or stop by the library or city hall during business hours the week of September 4 to record your contribution. |
