Mayor Craig Dirksen Invites Community to New Burnham Street Celebration The City of Tigard's major transportation project to rebuild Burnham Street near downtown Tigard has reached completion. The final finishing touches have been wrapped up in time for the big ribbon cutting celebration planned for Sunday, July 24. Tigard Mayor Craig Dirksen describes this as Tigard's most complex and challenging public works project to date. "Burnham Street was one of Tigard's oldest streets - an eyesore. Now we have a new street, up-to-date utilities, and an entrance way to the heart of our city that matches our community's spirit," says Mayor Dirksen. The new Burnham Street is also Tigard's first "green street, with energy-saving lighting and other sustainable features. The Mayor and City Council want every Tigard resident to join the celebration. A number of family-friendly events are planned starting with a pooch parade at 9:30 a.m. "The pooch parade will start at the downtown McDonalds and end at the crossroads of Burnham Street and Ash Avenue. We are not only celebrating completion of the Burnham Street project, but also the grand opening of the Ash Avenue Dog Park," explains Kim McMillan, the City of Tigard's project manager. With 300 local pet owners contributing to the design, Tigard's newest dog park has already received rave reviews. Events will also include a sidewalk art event and a scavenger hunt. There will be prizes for the pooch parade and scavenger hunt. Sidewalk art participants will be provided chalk and a reusable "chalk-it up" shopping bag. The events are free and open to all ages. Refreshments will be provided by Tigard's own De Angelo's Catering. The official welcome and ribbon cutting ceremony will be from 11:00 to 11:15 a.m. All festivities will wrap up by 2 p.m. For details on the New Burnham Street celebration visit the web page or contact Kim McMillan, P.E., Construction Services Engineering Manager (phone: 503-718-2642) |
