Upcoming Survey: Funding Sought for Sidewalks Near Tigard Library
The city wants to make it easier and safer for patrons who live nearby to reach the Tigard
Library by walking. The main focus of this effort is on closing sidewalks gaps along Hall Boulevard
within a half mile of the library. Eliminating these gaps will help make the trip to the city library
a healthy, sustainable, and enjoyable experience. The improvements also will allow residents with
limited mobility a safer walking route than the shoulder of the road. In the case of most gaps, six-foot- and eight-foot-wide concrete sidewalks are planned. An exception is the sidewalk gap located immediately north of the library, along the east side of Hall. This area is rare native turtle nesting habitat. To help preserve the area, an elevated boardwalk and handrail is planned. This will avoid the need to place several hundred yards of fill in the habitat area in order to install a more conventional concrete sidewalk. Since sidewalks are expensive to build, the city intends to seek grant funds to help cover some of the cost. To improve our grant application's competitiveness, we need to gather basic data on how many people now walk to the library along Hall and how many would walk if uninterrupted sidewalks were available. At present, we have no hard data on either of these key questions. To collect this data, beginning in early June, city staff will survey visitors as they arrive about how they traveled to the library. If you visit the library during the days and hours given below, please help support this effort by filling out a survey questionnaire. It will take only take one or two minutes of your time.
