City Celebrates Sunrise Property Purchase On May 18, 2011, the City of Tigard will celebrate the purchase of the Sunrise property. A special commemorative celebration will take place at 5:30 pm at the site located at 150th Avenue and Sunrise Lane in Tigard. Mayor Craig Dirksen will be the keynote speaker. Representatives from Washington County, the Trust for Public Land and Metro will also participate in the ceremony. The public and members of the press are encouraged to attend. The 20-acre property purchase marks one of the larger acquisitions made possible through the passage of a $17 million park bond approved by Tigard voters in 2010. The parcel is located in Tigard on the north side of Bull Mountain and will link Cach Park Natural Area and the Westside Powerline Trail corridor. Comprised of open space and wooded slopes, eventually the property will be transformed into a community park. Although the city does not have a formal plan to develop the property yet, typically community park amenities include: sports fields, trails, natural areas, picnic areas, playground equipment, parking and restrooms. The Trust for Public Land, a land conservation organization, worked to acquire an option for the city to purchase the Sunrise property. Following passage of the bond measure, the Tigard City Council approved the $5 million purchase and the transaction was completed on May 13, 2011. Prior to the city's purchase, a housing development was slated to be constructed on the property. Although a formal agreement has not been reached, Washington County has indicated a willingness to contribute $400,000 of their 2006 Metro Bond Local Share funds toward the purchase. |
