Tigard Celebrates Tree City USA Growth Award by Planting Trees The National Arbor Day Foundation has honored Tigard with its Tree City USA Growth Award for the third straight year. Tigard is a Tree City USA for the tenth year in a row. Tigard received the Growth Award at the April 12, 2011, City Council meeting. The City of Tigard is proud to celebrate these honors and commemorate Arbor Day 2011 with a major tree planting effort at Tigard schools. The city partnered with the Tigard-Tualatin School District to plant over 300 trees on the campuses of Metzger Elementary School, Templeton Elementary School, and Twality Middle School. The planting palette includes native and ornamental trees chosen for their low water and maintenance requirements. On April 22, 2011, Mayor Dirksen will join the second grade students of Metzger Elementary for a special assembly and ceremonial planting. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. The Growth Award recognizes environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities. The City of Tigard earned its third straight Growth Award through such efforts in 2010 as incorporating street tree planting in all of the city's Capital Improvement Projects, sending postcards to all new city residents on a quarterly basis with information about tree programs in Tigard, and holding community-wide tree events. More information about Tigard’s tree programs and policies can be found on the city's website or read about the Tree City USA program at www.arborday.org/TreeCityUSA. |
