Tigard Receives Third Tree City USA Growth Award For the third year in a row, the City of Tigard received the Tree City USA Growth Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation. This honors the city's commitment to urban forestry during the 2010 calendar year. Activities such as incorporating street tree planting in all of the City's Capital Improvement Projects, sending postcards to all new city residents on a quarterly basis with information about tree programs in Tigard, and holding community-wide tree events helped make the City eligible for the Growth Award this year. The Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service, encourage higher levels of tree care throughout America. The growth award recognizes achievement, communicates new ideas, and helps agencies plan for improving community tree care. Tigard has held Tree City USA status since 2001. We earned and maintain that distinction with our Tree Board, a tree ordinance, a comprehensive urban forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance. The 2010 Tree City USA Growth Award was presented to Mayor Craig Dirksen on April 12 by an Oregon Department of Forestry representative. More information about Tigard’s tree programs and policies can be found on the city's website or read about the Tree City USA program at www.arborday.org/TreeCityUSA. |
