Potso Dog Park Purchase Finalized
The City of Tigard has completed the purchase of the Potso Dog Park property. The park, located on Wall Street just off Hunziker Street in Tigard, was originally developed on property leased by the city from Coe Manufacturing in 2002. Since that time, the property has had several different owners, all of whom have continued to honor the city's lease.

The future of the dog park property recently came into question when, in lieu of payment from the property owner, Capital Pacific Bank took ownership and put the property up for sale. The bank did not respond to the city's requests to continue its lease of the property.

The 2009 Park System Master Plan, which serves as a guideline for Tigard's park land purchases, recommended the city retain its existing dog parks, including Potso Dog Park. The city's Park and Recreation Advisory Board agreed and made a formal recommendation that the city council authorize the property purchase in October 2010. The council formally approved the purchase on February 8, 2011.

The Trust for Public Land, a land conservation organization, acquired an option to purchase the property in late 2010. On March 28, 2011, the city finalized the purchase of the 2.6-acre property for $625,000, the property's appraised value. Funds for the property purchase came from the $17 million park bond measure passed by voters in November 2010.

Management of the park has been a cooperative venture between the city and the Tigard Dog Park Committee. Park use has increased every year since the park's inception. "The dog park brings people together in the community," said Tigard Dog Park Committee chairperson Chris Garsteck.

The city will work with the Tigard Dog Park Committee to seek public comment on potential park improvements. Park goers can expect expanded park hours in the future, and there are also plans to install a permanent water supply and to relocate the parking lot.

The 2.6-acre, off-leash area is the largest dog park in the city. Existing park amenities include: perimeter fencing, double gated entry area, shaded picnic tables, benches, interior perimeter path, and separate interior fenced area for small dogs and puppies.
