Dying Tree Will Be Given New Life
Tigard's City Arborist recently verified that a giant sequoia in the Durham Road right-of-way adjacent to the Durham School Park Subdivision (7974 Carol Ann Court) is dying. The decline of the tree has been obvious for several years and the frequency of inquiries has increased this year. As part of the evaluation, the City Arborist determined that an uncontrolled fall of the whole tree or any of its large branches had a high risk of causing injury to people, damage to property, or disruption to traffic in the area.
The city has contracted with Davey Tree Company of Portland to remove this tree before the new school year starts. The work will take place on August 30 and 31, primarily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Due to the large size of the tree and its challenging location close to homes and a busy street, a crane will be used to complete the removal. People in the area can expect some noise and temporary disruption of traffic during work hours. In an effort to give new life to this tree, the city plans to generate usable lumber products from appropriate sections of the tree. Yoder Mill in Canby will mill the lumber for use in tables, benches, and possibly small shelters to be used in Tigard parks and greenways. In addition, a section of the tree may be preserved for use as public art. The healthy giant sequoia growing to the east of the tree along Durham Road will remain. |
