Recent Drug Take-Back Event In Tigard Was A Success!
Update: 9/29/10

Tigard Police conducted a prescription drug take-back event on September 25 which yielded nearly 600 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs and medications. Participants were extremely appreciative for the opportunity to properly dispose of their unwanted pharmaceuticals. During the three-hour event, Tigard Police personnel assisted more than 250 vehicles as they passed through the collection point in the parking lot of Tigard City Hall. Nearly every participant expressed sincere appreciation for offering this service. As a result, Tigard Police will consider hosting more events like this to assist the community in disposing of prescription or unwanted drugs.

The "Prescription Drug Take-Back Event" was part of a national effort spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA.) The event was aimed at reducing the amount of illegal prescription drugs being abused and provide a safe and secure way to dispose of old/unused medications.

The abuse of prescription drugs has become increasingly prevalent among teens and young adults. In the past year, abuse of prescription pain killers ranked second behind marijuana as the nation's most prevalent illegal drug. The source of the drugs can be found in many homes today. Eliminating unwanted medications is one step towards keeping drugs from getting into the wrong hands.

More information about the program can be found at dea.gov.

Prescription Drug Take-Back Event Scheduled For Tigard
Original Post: 8/16/2010

In the continuing effort to eliminate unused and unwanted pharmaceutical drugs in our community, Tigard Police, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is conducting a "Pharmaceutical Drug Take-Back Day." Tigard Police invite you to participate in this locally held event to help reduce the illegal use and dangers of prescription drugs to those other than whom it was intended.

Please mark your calendar for Saturday, September 25, 2010. A drop-off center will be in the parking lot of Tigard City Hall located at 13125 SW Hall Blvd. The event will begin at 10 am. and continue until 1 pm.

The event in Tigard will be one of hundreds across the United States. As DEA stated, "this will be a bold effort by all law enforcement agencies throughout the country to take a proactive role in eliminating unwanted pharmaceutical drugs from our respective communities."

A 2009 survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that prescription drug abuse is on the rise, with 20% of teens saying they have taken a prescription drug without a doctor's prescription. Reducing the availability of prescription drugs may help to minimize the opportunity for medications to be stolen, resold or distributed illegally. Please consider removing your unwanted prescription drugs from your household and bring them to the "turn-in."

What to bring?
  • Expired or unwanted prescription medications
  • Medication from deceased family members
  • Drugs that didn't work for you, a family member or pet
  • Drugs no longer used
  • Unneeded over-the-counter medicines
  • Unknown tablets or capsules
  • We cannot accept thermometers, syringes, needles or medical waste of any type
