Tigard Public Library Will Close Thursday Mornings and Reduce Programs
Beginning Thursday, June 3, the Tigard Public Library will open at 1 p.m. on Thursdays as a result of service and personnel reductions throughout the City of Tigard. All other Library hours will remain the same. Closing the library one morning a week is one of several actions the City has taken to shore up its budget as a result of the lagging economy. With this closure, the Library will be open 66 hours per week.

The Tigard Library will eliminate some programs as a result of closing on Thursday mornings and staff layoffs. While the Library has sought to reduce impacts on the public, it will institute the following changes in programming, effective in June except where otherwise noted.

Program Eliminations:
  • Pre-school story time on Mondays at 10:30 a.m.
  • Both morning and evening Adult Book Discussion groups. The final sessions will be in June.
Program Reductions:
  • Weekend Adventures for kids will be reduced from four times to two times a month.
  • The number of computer classes will be cut back.
Program Time Changes:
  • The Thursday afternoon pre-school story time will begin at 1:15 p.m. instead of 1 p.m.
  • Book Babies will move from Thursday mornings to Monday mornings at 10:30 a.m.
Library Hours as of Thursday June 3, 2010
  • Sundays: Noon–6 p.m.
  • Mondays–Wednesdays: 10 a.m.–9 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 1 p.m.–9 p.m.
  • Fridays: 10 a.m.–9 p.m.
  • Saturdays: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
"Along with other City departments, the Library will be operating on a reduced budget next year," said Margaret Barnes, director of library services. "Although we will have fewer staff, our goal is to provide the same kind of competent, caring service that Tigard residents have come to expect. We hope the public will continue to support the Library and appreciate their understanding during these tight economic times."
