The Tigard City Council approved the potential purchase of the Summer Creek Property (locally known as the Fowler property). The property is adjacent to Fowler Middle School and generally bounded by Tigard Street, Tiedeman and Gallo Avenues. The city has been working in conjunction with the Trust for Public Land (TPL) to acquire the property. The city wants to purchase the land to create a publicly-owned park and natural area. The 43 acres of trees, streams and wetland will also include a combination field and a small interpretive shelter. The city hopes to purchase the land for $5.33 million. TPL has helped the city to secure a $1 million under a 'Nature in Neighborhoods' grant administered by Metro. This grant represents approximately 19 percent of the purchase price. TPL also secured a pledge from Washington County in the amount of $400,000 and from Clean Water Services in the amount of $100,000. Several other contributions are pending, but are not yet secured. "Most significantly," said Bob Betcone, Project Manager for TPL, "we remain hopeful that a park bond will aid our financing efforts." "Our intent to secure the Summer Creek Property as a city park protects this area from future development and provides access to a large natural area in the middle of a fully urbanized portion of the city," said Public Works Director Dennis Koellermeier. |
