Tigard Plants More Trees to Celebrate Growth Award For the second time, Tigard is the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program. To celebrate Arbor Day and earning the Growth Award, the city and the Tigard-Tualatin School District (TTSD) will join forces to plant 100 trees on the Mary Woodward Elementary School campus. "Known to most Tigard residents as the 'Arbor Day Lady,' Mary A. Woodward spent the major part of the 25 years she lived in Tigard promoting conservation and the beautification of the community," said Susan Stark Haydon, Tigard-Tualatin School District. "Each year at Templeton Elementary School, Mrs. Woodward collected a penny apiece from every first grade student and then put the money toward the purchase of a tree which was planted on the school grounds in the spring. She was also instrumental in obtaining landscape materials for city parks---including 1,000 fir trees planted at Cook Park." An Oregon Department of Forestry representative will present the 2009 Tree City USA Growth Award to Mayor Craig Dirksen at the April 13, 2010 City Council Meeting. The Growth Award recognizes environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities. Adding an Urban Forestry section to the city's Comprehensive Plan and increased outreach efforts helped make the city eligible for the Growth Award. Tigard also received its ninth consecutive award as a Tree City USA Community by the Arbor Day Foundation. This national recognition honor Tigard's commitment to community forestry. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. More information about Tigard’s tree programs and policies can be found on the city's website or read about the Tree City USA program at www.arborday.org/TreeCityUSA. |
