Tigard Celebrates Trees During April

On March 23, 2010 Tigard's Mayor Dirksen proclaimed April to be Arbor Month in the City of Tigard. Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. Nationally, Arbor Day is celebrated the last Friday of April. In Oregon, the first week of April is known as Oregon Arbor Week. In Tigard, City Council encourages citizens to celebrate trees during April.

Events are planned all month long. For more information, please see the Arbor Day page. Highlights include:

  • Tree Care Workshop - Introduction to Ornamental Tree Pruning
Wednesday, April 7 at 1:30, Library Community Room
Arborist Phil Hickey, with over 15 years of experience, will cover the basics of pruning ornamental trees, the different types of pruning techniques, how to make a proper pruning cut, and knowing how to prune select branches for good canopy structure and form.

  • SOLV-IT EVENT: Mary Woodward Elementary Ivy Pull (12325 SW Katherine Street, Tigard)
Saturday, April 17, 2010, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Meet in the parking lot at the school)
Help us pull English Ivy from a new stream restoration site. For more information contact Carla Staedter at 503-718-2788 or carla@tigard-or.gov.

  • OMSI presents Forest Wonders at the Tigard Public Library
    Tuesday, April 27, 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. (2 performances) Library Community Room | Free!
The program is open to children grades K-5. Registration is required and limited to 30 students per class. Contact Marissa Daniels at 503-718-2428 or marissa@tigard-or.gov to secure your spot.

An Arbor Day observance and proclamation are one of four standards established by the National Arbor Day Foundation to qualify for Tree City USA. This is the ninth year Tigard has received this recognition, and the city's tenth Arbor Day celebration. More information about Tigard's tree programs and policies can be found at www.tigard-or.gov/trees or read about the Tree City USA program at www.arborday.org/TreeCityUSA.
