City Council to Consider Lower Street Maintenance Fee Increase The Tigard City Council will hold a special City Council meeting on Tuesday January 5 at 6:30 PM to consider a smaller increase in the street maintenance fee. The increase is needed to fund preventive maintenance and repair of existing streets. On December 8, 2009, after 14 months and 10 public meetings, the City Council adopted an ordinance to increase the street maintenance fee. In recognition of the current economic times, the increase would be phased in over a three year period with the first increase delayed until July 1, 2010. Representatives of the Northwest Grocers Association and downtown business owners expressed concerns at the December 8 public hearing. In response to the issues raised, Council President Wilson and Councilor Webb along with staff members met with representatives of the Grocers Association and the downtown businesses. All parties agree that funding street maintenance at an adequate level is important and that a modest increase is needed even before the economy recovers to ensure sufficient funding for the program. As a result of the discussions, a revised ordinance will be considered by City Council in a public hearing next Tuesday. Under the revised ordinance all customers would see a reduction in the recently adopted increase, more than a dollar less per month. Provisions in the ordinance include adjustments to the annual funding level, distribution of costs, and asphalt price. For business customers a cap of 250 parking spaces is maintained on a lower fee per space. View the Tigard Street Maintenance Update. |
