The City of Tigard Wins an Energy Star Grant
In accordance with the City's facilities maintenance schedule, the City of Tigard's Permit Center facility roof, which is over 20 years old, was budgeted to be replaced this year. Some areas of the roof have deteriorated to the point that the R-Value (insulation effectiveness) is 0.

The City applied for, and was fortunate enough to receive, a Department of Energy Grant for $230,500. This was the total amount of grant the City was eligible for. This grant is enough to cover the estimated cost of roof construction.

Grant money will be used to replace the existing roof with a new Energy Star compliant roof. The new roof system will carry an R-Value of 20.5. The City estimates roof replacement would result in a 13% reduction in energy use (approximately 1,003 therms per year or 20,060 therms over the 20+ life of the new roof). This translates to a reduction in Green House Gas emissions of 5 metric tons of CO2 annually, or 100 metric tons of CO2 over the life of the roof.

As we strive to make Tigard more sustainable, the City will continue our efforts to use emerging technology. The City will be going out to bid this winter with roof construction occurring in the spring.
