Tigard's 5th Annual Family Fest: 3 Days - All Free - All Fun!

The City of Tigard will host the fifth annual Family Fest on September 10 - 12, 2009. All events take place in Tigard and are free to the public.

The free family fun kicks-off Thursday, September 10 at 6 p.m. with a Genealogy Workshop in the Tigard Library Computer Center. At 7 p.m., wander downstairs to the Library Community Room for Camp Play-a-lot. Enjoy Native American storytellers, games and camping activities - including a station for kids to build their own "dirt cups" and "ants-on- a- log."*
*Dirt is Oreo cookies & pudding, Ants are raisins on celery stalks with peanut butter. No bugs gave their life for our recipe!

On Friday, September 11, at 7 p.m. join us for Family Movie Night. Bring the entire family to the Library Community Room for Disney's 1961 The Parent Trap with Haley Mills. Enjoy free movie treats and help us celebrate the city's 48th birthday. Kids under age 9 will need a chaperone.

The fun continues Saturday, September 12, at 9 a.m. with our annual 5K Fun Run/Walk, starting at City Hall, followed by a free breakfast at the finish line and a free bus ride back to City Hall. We're giving away free t-shirts to the first 200 runners/walkers registered for the race.

On-line registration begins August 28, 2009, or show up on race day. As always, strollers and well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome.

The Main Street Block Party starts at 1 p.m. at the corner of Burnham Street and Main Street. Enjoy games, prizes, live music and more. Special thanks to the downtown businesses who partnered with us for this event - Tyler's Automotive, The Sub Shop, Kepler's Upholstery, Tigard Cleaners, Sherrie's Jewelry Box and more!

Bring family and friends to the grassy commons behind the Tigard Library at 5:30 p.m., to get a free hot dog or hamburger. Grill-masters for this event are none other than Mayor and Council who will grill their best for the first 300 picnickers! All you need to bring is the rest of your picnic - or stop by one of the Main Street restaurants and purchase a ready-made dinner to go! Don't forget to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Save room for dessert. We're giving away Ice Cream at 6 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m.to celebrate Tigard's 48th birthday while you enjoy a 7 p.m. concert in the Tigard Library Community Room by the Tualatin Valley Community Band.

The 5th anniversary of Family Fest comes to a close with a fantastic Fireworks finale at dusk. We hope you can join us!

This event began in 2005 when student Jennifer Ries, then a 2nd grader, wrote a letter to Mayor Craig Dirksen suggesting a new holiday in Tigard called "Family Day" with cookies and fireworks. The Mayor and Council thought it was a great idea, and since then, it's become an opportunity to celebrate the city's birthday, and honor the great people and businesses that make Tigard a place to call home.

An incredible team of volunteers brings you this year's event. The members of this year's steering committee are: Jennifer and Lori Ries, Melissa Beck, Mark and Melissa NewMyer, Kristin Benda, Marissa Daniels, Jane Davies, Terri Smith, Connie Ramaekers, the Tigard Youth Advisory Council, the Tigard Lions and Liz Newton, Assistant City Manager.

Joanne Bengtson, Executive Assistant to the City Manager & Mayor coordinates and assists volunteers with the event.
