Barrows Bridge Update
Last year there were plans to close the Barrows Road Bridge located between Scholls Ferry Road and Walnut Street. The Tigard City Council received a flood of feedback from residents asking for some way to keep the bridge open.

Working with Washington County and the City of Beaverton, Tigard Council reached an agreement to repair the bridge—sharing equally in the cost of the project. The total project cost is estimated at $205,000. Tigard’s share is approximately $69,000.

Within the agreement, each jurisdiction agrees that:

  • All three jurisdictions acknowledge that the realignment of Barrows Road to connect to Davies Road is the long-term plan for Barrows Road east of its intersection with Murray Boulevard and Walnut Street.
  • The cities of Beaverton and Tigard agree to assume joint jurisdiction of Barrows Road from its intersection with Murray Boulevard and Walnut Street to its intersection with Scholls Ferry Road after the project is completed.
  • Washington County will either upgrade the portion of road to be transferred to an agreed upon condition, or provide funding to the two cities for that upgrade.
The bridge repair work is expected to begin in late July 2009 and should be completed by the end of August 2009. When the work is completed, the bridge is expected to have a life span of 15 years or more. The realignment of Barrows Road to connect to Davies Road can be pursued during this period.
