Grants and Economic Stimulus Benefit Tigard
Grants and Economic Stimulus Benefit Tigard
The city received notification for the following awards and grants, most
earmarked for infrastructure and safety improvements.
Water Infrastructure:
Tigard has been awarded federal recovery funds from the Oregon Economic and
Community Development Department (OECDD) to help construct and improve our
drinking water system.
These federal recovery dollars are part of a nationwide effort by the
Environmental Protection Agency to fund drinking water infrastructure
projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
A $2,488,000 grant will fund a Storage Tank Seismic Upgrade and Transfer Pump Station
Construction Project. The city’s drinking water system is primarily conveyed
through an existing water storage reservoir that is more than 30 years old
and in need of repair to ensure uninterrupted water supply. This
project will enable the city to retrofit the water reservoir against
a seismic event and replace the existing undersized single pump system
with a more appropriately sized energy efficient pump station.
Transportation:
The transportation funding package includes $1,116,000
for pavement
preservation overlays on Durham Road, 72nd Avenue, and Bonita Road.
Also included is $160,000 for “small fix” congestion solutions
which are smaller projects at
key locations that can help traffic move better without having to
widen roads or do major construction. These small projects include
traffic signal improvements, such as flashing yellow arrow left
turn signals which allow drivers to turn left when there are gaps
in opposing traffic, instead of having to sit through the signal
cycle for a green arrow. These would only be installed at locations
where traffic engineers judge them to be safe.
Work will be performed in coordination with Washington County and the
Oregon Department of Transportation. Streets will remain open during this
work, although there may be some delays.
Public Safety:
The Tigard Police Department will receive $86,099 in ARRA funding from
the Department of Justice for an e-ticketing system; $10,000 traffic
safety grant for a safety belt campaign; $2,437 for pedestrian safety
enforcement; $125,000 grant for Gang Resistance Education and Training;
$16,400 from Homeland Security and $6,247 for bulletproof vest equipment
for police officer safety.
Literacy:
A $9,368 Ready to Read grant will fund storytellers for weekly Spanish Story
Time, fund summer reading events for children and teens and help with the
purchase of almost 1,100 prize books for children and teens who reach their
summer reading goals.
