On Saturday, December 6th, 100 Tigard elementary and middle school children will be claiming their new bicycle and helmet they were awarded. The selected children participated in an essay contest coordinated by Tigard Police with the help of the Tigard-Tualatin School District. The children wrote on the premise; "Why should the Tigard Police give me a bicycle?" A Tigard business, ACS Testing Inc., donated the new bicycles and helmets to Tigard Police and requested they be distributed to Tigard area children. The idea of the contest was to possibly identify children who may not have access to or an opportunity to own a bicycle. The selected essays were chosen from the nearly 600 hundred submitted. The essays were read and selected from an impartial panel comprised of police department members and City of Tigard employees. On Saturday, between 11am and 2 pm, the selected essayists and their families are invited to the Tigard Public Works Building located at 8777 SW Burnham St. to pick up their bicycle. Also on hand will be the "Trauma Nurses Talk Tough" from Legacy Health Systems. The nurses will be properly fitting the bicycle recipients with a new helmet. Tigard Police will be providing a new bicycle lock to keep their new wheels secure. There will be raffles planned throughout the entire event to give siblings a chance to take home a prize. Volunteers will be serving hot dogs and other snacks which will add to the festive mood. Tigard Police would like to thank the organizations that also supported this positive community event. Support from Riceworks, Tualatin Haggen, Tigard Costco and Franz Bakery. Also, assistance from Legacy Health Systems and the Tigard Police Reserves helped to culminate the successes of our youth in Tigard. |
