Tigard Police Sponsor an Essay Contest for Tigard School Children With the help of a Tigard business, ACS Testing Inc., Tigard Police will be providing over 100 new bicycles and helmets to elementary and middle school students in Tigard this December. The idea of an essay contest came as a result of the need to select children to receive one of over 100 bicycles donated by ACS Testing Inc. Last year, ACS Testing Inc. provided just over 100 bicycles to some very happy Tigard children. The company's owner, Bob Brown, wanted to do something out of the ordinary for children who for the most part, may not have access to or an opportunity to own a bicycle. Brown then turned to the Tigard Police to see how he could carry out this idea. With the help of school staff, Tigard Police was able to identify deserving children and deliver them a bicycle. This year, children who would like a bicycle will need to put out effort. Children choosing to participate will need to write an essay based on the question; "Why should the Tigard Police give you a bicycle?" The idea of the giveaway, coupled with the element of writing an essay was agreeable to the school district. By now, all children attending school in Tigard should be aware of the contest and hopefully have begun to work on their individual essay. The contest deadline is November 12th. A host of Tigard Police, City of Tigard staff as well as representatives of the Tigard-Tualatin School District will read and score the essays received. The children selected will be invited to an event on December 6th to pick up their bicycle and helmet. In addition, the event will also provide opportunity for the bicycle recipient to have their new helmet properly fitted by representatives of the Legacy Trauma Nurses Talk Tough program who will be on hand. Children will also be able to learn about bicycle rules of the road and other safety related issues from Tigard Police Bicycle Patrol Officers. The police will also provide each child a bicycle lock to help keep their new bicycle secure. Questions concerning the essay contest and bicycle giveaway can be directed to the Tigard Police at 503-718-2561. |
