Tigard Police Emphasize Pedestrian Safety Within the next 6 weeks, members of the Tigard Police Traffic and Patrol Units will be taking extra steps to ensure pedestrian safety and bring attention to the importance of pedestrian related traffic laws. Oregon law requires motorists to yield and stop for pedestrians who are legally crossing streets. Violation of the law is a Class B traffic infraction with a penalty of $250.00. Tigard Officers are planning to conduct several operations at various locations around Tigard. The locations are based on officer observations and complaints expressed by pedestrians noting difficulty in attempts to safely cross the road. The locations include intersections along Sequoia Pkwy., 72nd Ave., Pacific Hwy., 121st Ave., and Hall Blvd. The ability for police to carry out pedestrian safety enforcement campaigns hinges on grant funding Tigard Police was awarded. Police caution motorists to always expect pedestrians near and in the road attempting to cross. Police also emphasize the proper response for pedestrians crossing roads as well. Tigard Police is also the recipient of some additional grant funding to help reduce the number of motorists operating a vehicle under the influence. The enhanced efforts by police include specially assigned traffic officers observing and detecting motorists driving under the influence in Tigard between 10:00 pm and 4:00 am. Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and nonfatally injure someone every two minutes (NHTSA 2006). Tigard Police urge motorists to not drink and drive.
