Tigard to Test Emergency Notification System On Thursday, June 19, Tigard will conduct its first citywide test of CodeRed, an emergency notification system. Tigard residents and businesses will receive a "test" phone call between 6 and 7 p.m. The recorded message will explain the system is being tested and will ask call recipients to complete a short online survey to evaluate the effectiveness of the notification system. Most Tigard businesses and residents with published telephone numbers were automatically registered in the CodeRed system in the fall of 2007. Those with non-published numbers, cell phone numbers, Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP), or recently acquired numbers are encouraged to register their contact information via the City's web site at www.tigard-or.gov/CodeRed. In an actual emergency, the system would give call recipients up-to-the-minute details on utility outages, missing persons, fires, evacuations, and floods. The recorded message would provide information about the emergency and what action call recipients should take to ensure their safety. The notification can be citywide or can target a specific geographic area within Tigard. Tigard implemented the CodeRed emergency notification system in the fall of 2007. CodeRed has the ability make up to 100,000 phone calls an hour, or about 1,600 calls per minute. |
