Urbanization Forum Public Meeting --Thursday, June 19 at 6:30 p.m. --Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro --Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street On April 24, 2008, city elected officials and representatives from service districts within Washington County joined with the Board of Commissioners to launch an Urbanization Forum. The goal of the forum is to address two issues: 1. What is the best way to accommodate and plan for the tremendous growth anticipated for Washington County; and 2. What are the appropriate roles for cities, service districts, and county governments in delivering services to the residents of urban Washington County? We hope that you will participate in this important process. You can do so through public meetings and an Urbanization Forum community website. The website will provide for information and updates, and enable citizens to send in comments and suggestions. The site will be online in advance of the June 19 meeting. The next public meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 19 at the Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro (527 East Main Street). The facilitator for the Urbanization Forum is Mark Cushing (mark.cushing@tonkon.com). The meeting will focus on the question of governance of future urban areas that may be designated outside the current Urban Growth Boundary (UGB), through the Urban/Rural Reserve process currently being conducted by the three metropolitan counties and Metro. The June 19 session will include opportunity for direct public comments during the final part of the session. The discussion will outline: (a) whether all future development outside the current UGB must occur through the appropriate city; and (b) how such a policy, if approved, is implemented. The dialogue will focus on whether a city must manage this activity, and the framing of this issue does not imply that there would not, or could not, be a role for service districts and the County. |
