Tigard Girl Scouts Promote Canines for Clean Water
Girl Scout Troop 1664 plans to educate fellow scouts on the importance of properly disposing of pet waste as part of an Earth Day event on Saturday, April 26, at Templeton Elementary School, 9500 SW Murdock Street, Tigard, Oregon. The event will take place from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and is open to pre-registered girl scouts and their families. Approximately 200 people are expected to attend. After reading in Tigard's Cityscape newsletter that 15 percent of fecal bacteria in local waterways came from canine waste, Junior Girl Scouts, Lucy Dickinson, Lauren Lusk, and Courtney King contacted Tigard Surface Water Quality Coordinator Carla Staedter. The scouts wanted to share the Canines for Clean Water message of "Scoop the Poop, Bag It, and Throw it in the Trash." Following a training session with Carla, the girls designed a station at the Earth Day event with this theme in mind. Their station will feature a revamped version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, fact sheets, skits, Canines for Clean Water pledge cards, dog waste scoopers, and dog bandanas. "Brown" prizes, of Tootsie Rolls and Hershey's Kisses, will go to game winners, and the girls hope to see all "scouting" dogs donning their bandanas to promote poop scooping. The City of Tigard has been a leader in the Canines for Clean Water program. The program was developed by Clean Water Services and the Tualatin Basin Public Awareness Committee after a 2006 study linked high levels of E. coli bacteria in waterways to canine waste. The City of Tigard is a member of the Tualatin Basin Public Awareness Committee. |
