Tigard's Top Tree Stewards
On Tuesday, April 8, 2008, Tigard City Council recognized Costco Corporation and Cascade Education Corps as Tigard's Top Tree Stewards over the past year. As part of the Oregon Arbor Week Celebration, Tigard announced the Top Tree Stewardship Awards after Tigard Mayor Craig Dirksen read an Arbor Day Proclamation. The City is committed to preserving Tigard's urban forest all year long, and invites residents to celebrate Arbor Day with the City during the month of April.

Costco Corporation was awarded a Top Tree Stewardship Award for enthusiasm and good faith in working with the Tree Board and City Staff. When the site was developed in the early 1990's, extensive tree removal occurred and the Planning Commission imposed a condition that parking lot trees be planted in such a manner that 35% of the parking lot be covered by tree canopy within 20 years. When it came to the City's attention that many of the trees had not survived, or were failing to thrive in undersized planters, the Tigard Tree Board and City Staff urged Costco to remedy the situation. Costco responded enthusiastically and thoroughly by hiring WRG Design, and Robinson Construction, to remove the dead and undersized trees, reconstruct and enlarge 37 parking lot planters, and install 129 large caliper trees that are expected to achieve the target canopy goal. This work was completed earlier this year, and without the loss of a single parking space.

Cascade Education Corps (CEC) was presented an award for their dedication to community service in the area of environmental restoration. The CEC is a group of approximately 15 students, per semester, from Tigard High School that dedicate their time to community service based learning and environmental restoration. The CEC has been a major supporter in the City's efforts to transform Derry Dell Creek, a tributary of Fanno Creek that has been overrun with blackberry and other invasive, non-native species.

Over the past three years, the CEC has:
  • Cleared over three acres of blackberry and other invasive species from Derry Dell Creek's banks;
  • Installed 3,600 square feet of erosion control on steep portions;
  • Planted over 1,800 native trees and shrubs;
  • Taken on maintenance of a 2.5 acre section of creek restoration plantings including installation of mulch rings around 850 trees and shrubs;
  • Resolved erosion problems by locating and retrofitting numerous drainage pipes that discharged directly onto the creek's banks; and
  • Provided logistic and organizational support to volunteer efforts by marking planting locations and delivering plant materials.
In addition to work on Derry Dell Creek, the CEC restored a very steep, 5,000 sq. ft area of City-owned riparian forest on 118th Court. This included clearing, grubbing, and replanting of 650 native trees and shrubs.

To nominate an individual, group, or business for Tigard's Top Tree Stewardship Awards, please contact Marissa Daniels at 503-718-2428 or marissa@tigard-or.gov.
