Tigard Reads Nicole Mones' The Last Chinese Chef and Offers Chinese Events for All Ages Throughout May
The Tigard Public Library will launch its first Tigard community-wide reading program, "Tigard Reads," with Nicole Mones' novel, The Last Chinese Chef. "Tigard Reads" encourages the community to read the same book, participate in book discussion groups, meet the author and attend Chinese-themed events throughout May. Chinese culture, history and food are woven into the month-long program.

Tigard Reads will kick off on Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m. with an evening of traditional Chinese music from the Classical Chinese Trio, a taste of Chinese appetizers and distribution of free copies of the The Last Chinese Chef to library cardholders, while supplies last.

Oregon author Nicole Mones will speak on the inspiration and writing of her book on Friday, May 16, at 7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to attend a book discussion group at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13 or 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20.

Other activities throughout the month include a tea tasting, calligraphy, a lion dance, Chinese storytelling, a travel presentation about China, and Chinese Rod puppets. Special Chinese-themed story times are planned for children, and the Teen Anime Club will focus on Chinese-American anime.

Tigard Reads wraps up on Tuesday, May 30, at 7 p.m. with a presentation about the Portland Art Museum's Early Chinese Art collection.

All "Tigard Reads" events are free and will be held at the Tigard Public Library. Registration is required for some programs. Tigard Reads is sponsored by the Friends of the Tigard Public Library. The Library is located at 13500 SW Hall Blvd., Tigard, OR 97223. For a complete schedule of events, visit the Library's Web site at www.tigard-or.gov/library, call 503-684-6537 or pick up a flyer at the Library.
