Arbor Day Celebration Tigard Celebrates Arbor Day
In addition to celebrating Arbor Day during the month of April, Tigard is committed to caring for its urban forest all year long. The City was recently recognized as a Tree City USA for the 7th consecutive year. Tigard has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA: a tree board or department; a tree care ordinance; a comprehensive community forestry program; and an Arbor Day observance. Kristin Ramstad, with the Oregon Department of Forestry, will present Mayor Dirksen with the 2007 Tree City USA award on April 10, 2008, at the City's Arbor Day Tree Planting.

During 2007, specific accomplishments of the community forestry program include continuation of the street and park tree maintenance efforts, an annual street-tree giveaway program for eligible property owners, and collaborating with the private development community in preserving and planting trees during land development. In addition, over 3,000 trees were planted in the City's riparian corridors, parks, and other public properties.

Tigard's Mayor Dirksen will proclaim April 10, 2008, as the City's Arbor Day, but encourages residents to be involved in activities to celebrate all month long. Mayor Dirksen will be observing this special time by reading an Arbor Day proclamation at the April 8th City Council meeting, and planting trees at Templeton Elementary School on April 10th. What will you do to celebrate? The following is a list of ways you and your family may want to join the City of Tigard in celebrating Arbor Day:
  • Tune in to the City Council Meeting on Tuesday April 8, 2008, as the Mayor reads an Arbor Day proclamation and presents awards to Tigard's Top Tree Stewards of 2007.
  • Learn more about what the Tigard Tree Board is doing and/or attend a Tree Board meeting. To find out more about current Tree Board programs and/or meeting dates, times, and locations, contact City Arborist, Todd Prager, at 503-718-2700 or todd@tigard-or.gov.
  • Attend a public hearing and voice your opinion regarding the addition of an Urban Forest Chapter to Tigard's Comprehensive Plan. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2008, at City Hall, with more to follow. Contact John Floyd for details regarding this and related meetings of the Planning Commission and Council at (503) 718-2429 or johnfl@tigard-or.gov.
  • Surf the new and improved tree information web page to learn about the City of Tigard's Tree programs and policies.
  • Visit the Tigard Public Library and pick up a book about Trees. They have a special arbor week book list available all month long.
  • Participate in the SOLV IT event on Saturday, April 19, 2008, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and help protect trees by pulling English Ivy from the Ascension Trail. For more information, contact Carla Staedter at 503-718-2788.
  • Evaluate your own landscape to determine if you have trees that are in need of maintenance or if there are any tree planting opportunities. Contact the Pacific Northwest Chapter of Arboriculture at www.pnwisa.org or 503-874-8263 for a referral to a professional certified arborist who can assist you.
  • Get involved in the process of updating Tigard's tree ordinances and standards to better protect and enhance the urban forest. Contact Marissa Daniels at 503-718-2428 or marissa@tigard-or.gov to receive updates about relevant meetings and events.
