Police Suggest Parents Reaffirm "Stranger Danger" Information with Children Earlier today, a nine year old Metzger Elementary student reported to Tigard Police that an unidentified man in a vehicle made unwanted contact with her. The child told police this occurred while she waited for a school bus at approximately 7:15 a.m. Thursday morning. The girl recalled the vehicle was originally traveling eastbound on Greenburg Rd., made a u-turn, and then proceeded to drive towards the area she was standing. The vehicle passed by her slightly and stopped along the side of the roadway. She saw the driver motion for her to approach closer to the car. She stated the suspect did not speak nor lower the window. The vehicle was described as a newer Beetle, gray in color with some passenger side damage. The driver, who appeared to be alone in the vehicle, is described as likely a white man, possibly in his late teens to 20's. The girl recalled he was wearing a baseball cap at the time. No other descriptive information is available. The girl did not approach the car. She saw her bus was quickly approaching and then boarded safely. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Tigard Police Department at 503-639-6168. It is always important for children to understand the steps to take that will work to keep them safe. The key element of child safety is knowing what to do. Parents should reaffirm to children the importance of always staying a safe distance from situations that involve strangers in vehicles. Obtaining help or getting away is the first priority. If there is an opportunity to look at the license plate or vehicle description that should only be done once the child is out of possible harm. Parents should periodically review safety ideas with their children. Help them understand how to stay safe when they travel to and from school or at play. |
