Daily Meals Program Back in Operation at Tigard Senior Center!

We have great news!! The daily meals program is back in operation at the Senior Center during continued renovation.

The Tigard Senior Center, owned by the City of Tigard, was constructed 27 years ago. During that time it has served as the focal point for nutritional and social services to seniors living in the Tigard, King City and surrounding areas. Participation in the center's programs, managed by the non-profit Loaves and Fishes organization, has increased at a steady rate each year. The 2007 nutritional goal was to serve 38,700 meals, including Meals-on-Wheels delivered to the homebound.

Because of the center's age and increased usage, the building needed to be upgraded.

In March 2005, a Senior Center Site Committee held a community visioning retreat. In mid-2007, the city was awarded $307,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds to partially finance needed renovations. With the city and Loaves and Fishes contributing $373,000 and $100,000 respectively to the project budget, Kel-Tec Construction, Inc. was awarded a contract to construct the most-needed improvements.

Under phase one of the plan, remodeling of the kitchen area more than doubled its capacity. Changes also include the installation of modern, commercial-grade and properly vented equipment.

Adding a 619-square foot library and lecture room near the center's front entrance will increase classroom and activity space. These and other improvements will provide important services to the area's fast-growing senior population and expand use of the Tigard Senior Center.

Please note: The Tigard Senior Center Renovation Project is STILL Underway. It anticipated that the new Library, main entry, and the remainder of projects will be completed and re-opened by March 15.

For questions regarding the renovation, contact Acting Parks and Facilities Manager Steve Martin at 503-718-2583 or steve@tigard-or.gov, or contact Nick Nissen at 503-718-2605 or nicklas@tigard-or.gov.
