Mayor Dirksen and Tigard High School sophomore student Alexander Carsh will represent Tigard at the America's Promise Alliance's 100 Best Communities for Young People National Forum in Washington, DC October 10-11, 2007. The Mayor and Mr. Carsh (accompanied by his father) are part of a delegation which includes Tigard-Tualatin School District board member Barry Albertson, school Superintendent Rob Saxton and Liz Newton, Assistant City Manager for Tigard. The group was selected to attend the event because of their work on behalf of children and youth in Tigard. The event honors the cities and towns named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People (100 Best). They will join individuals from other winning communities, along with the Alliance's Founder and Current Chair, General Colin Powell (Ret.) and his wife, Alma Powell. Mayor Dirksen said "It's an honor to be recognized for the efforts Tigard has made to improve the lives of our young people." The National Forum is the Alliance's opportunity to bring together all the 100 Best communities. During the two-day forum, attendees will have an opportunity to hear from Alliance leadership on a new five-year campaign to improve the lives of 15 million disadvantaged young people and participate in educational sessions and workshops on issues important to children and youth advocates. Many of these sessions will highlight some of the innovative and successful programs underway in 100 Best communities nationwide. Attendees will also hear from leading political commentators, journalists and authors; Morton Kondracke, of Roll Call newspaper," Fred Barnes, of The Weekly Standard and Eleanor Clift of Newsweek and PBS's "The McLaughlin Group." The closing luncheon keynote will be Dr. Milton Goldberg, renowned education policy expert. First held in 2005, 100 Best is an annual competition held by the Alliance to recognize the outstanding efforts of cities and towns-large and small, rural and urban-to make young people a top priority.
