City Sign Code Amended
AREA REAL ESTATE OFFICES: Sign Code Amendment Pertaining to A-Frame Signs

On January 27, 2004, the Tigard City Council approved an amendment to the city sign code that would allow A-frame (open house) signs in residential zones. Previously, such signs were permitted only in commercial zones. The amendment was sponsored by Heather Adams of Meadows Realty Group and Jane Leo of the Metro Realtors Association. The change will go into effect February 26, 2004. The amended code documents will be posted as the change becomes effective. We are happy to eliminate code provisions that prohibited such signs in residential zones.

The change will allow A-frames as temporary lawn signs. No permit is required. A-frame signs are limited to six square feet per face in any residential zone. A-frame signs are permitted only between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. They cannot obstruct clear vision areas of corners and driveways as described in Chapter 18.795 of the Community Development Code.

Temporary signs are to be placed on private property and not within the public right-of-way. Permission should be obtained from the property owner prior to placing any sign. Typical violations occur when signs are placed in the street planter strip or on sidewalks, in drainage areas, next to the curb, etc.

The right-of-way varies depending on the specific location. To locate the public right-of-way, check with the Planning/Engineering counter at City Hall: 503-639-4171.
