Tigard Responds to Winter Storm In order to address the accumulation of snow and ice, the City of Tigard's Public Works Department implemented its Sanding Response Plan on Monday, January 5th, 2004. For the past three days, crews have been working 24 hours-a-day plowing and sanding roadways throughout the Tigard area. During this period, crew members, working 12-hour shifts, have logged over 504 man-hours laying several hundred yards of sand and plowing several miles of roads. The Sanding Response Plan differentiates areas based upon priority. Due to the large amount of snow and ice, crews have been instructed to concentrate their efforts on Primary and Secondary routes only. Primary routes include those areas with steep streets such as Canterbury Lane, Ascension Drive and Benchview Terrace. Secondary routes include major collector streets such as 72nd Avenue, Durham Road and Greenburg Road. Minor collector and residential streets have been identified as areas of low priority. As the cold weather subsides, crews will begin to sand and plow these roadways. However, snow & ice covered streets are not the only effects of the cold weather. In addition to attending to hazard roads, crews have been busy responding to customer service requests concerning fallen trees and stranded vehicles; providing assistance to the local Fire Departments and Tri-Met; as well as addressing the numerous calls regarding frozen pipes. During the past three days, water crews have responded to over 80 customer service requests, of which 95% dealt exclusively with the freezing and leaking of pipes located within private residences. Even with limited staff, crews have been able to respond to the majority of customer service requests within 1 hour of initial contact. For more information or to report a concern, please contact the City of Tigard Public Works Department at 503-639-4171. Thank you. |
