Tigard Council President Craig Dirksen Accepts Appointment as Mayor
At its December 16, 2003 meeting, the Tigard City Council asked Mayor Pro Tem Dirksen to consider serving as Mayor through December 2004 to fill the vacancy created by Mayor Jim Griffith's death. A resolution will be considered by the Council at its meeting on January 13, 2004, to take formal action to appoint Craig Dirksen as Mayor. The resolution also directs the City Recorder to ensure that an election is conducted for the Mayor's position at the November 2, 2004, election date.

Appointment of Council President Craig Dirksen as Mayor would leave a vacant Council seat and a vacancy in the Council President position. At the January 13 Council meeting, Council will discuss and give direction to staff on how to proceed to fill the Council vacancy and consider election of a Council President to serve until December 31, 2004.

Upon announcing his decision, Mayor Pro Tem Dirksen said, "I greatly appreciate the faith and confidence expressed by Council in offering me this appointment, and I promise to fulfill the responsibilities to the best of my ability."
