New Lighted Crosswalk Activated on Bonita Road at Milton Court
The newly installed crosswalk lighting system at the Bonita Road/Milton Court intersection was activated on
Thursday morning, December 4, 2003. City Councilor Sydney Sherwood and Parks Manager Daniel Plaza cut the
ribbon officially opening the crosswalk and activating the lights.
The contractor, Northstar Electrical Contractors, began the project in mid-June 2003 and recently completed the work. The completed project includes installation of a complete lighted crosswalk system with new push-button poles, signs, and painted crosswalk with flashing lights. The project includes pole-mounted advance warning lights and the installation of wheelchair ramps on Bonita Road. The lights are pedestrian-activated by push buttons mounted on poles. This crosswalk is similar to lighted crosswalks installed at four other locations in the City. Previous lighted crosswalks used lights embedded in the pavement, which were not easily accessed for maintenance. This installation uses newer technology that allows lighted markers to be placed on top of the paved surface for easy access. Lighting is triggered via electrical induction from lines installed in the pavement under the markers. Crosswalk lighting systems have proven to be effective in enhancing safe crossings at marked intersections. This installation should enhance safe crossing of Bonita Road at Milton Court for those wishing to use the new Bonita Park now being constructed along Fanno Creek adjacent to Milton Court. |
