Celebrate William Stafford's Birthday at Tigard Public Library On Wednesday, January 7th at 7:00 P.M., the Tigard Public Library will host the Friends of William Stafford and an illustrious group of Oregon Poets to celebrate the birthday of Oregon's Poet Laureate, William Stafford. This event will be held in the Puett Room of the Library. William Stafford was born in Kansas in 1914. In 1948 he moved to Oregon to teach at Lewis and Clark College. His first major collection of poems, Traveling Through the Dark, was published when Stafford was forty-eight, and it won the National Book Award in 1963. From 1970 to 1971, William Stafford was Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Stafford published numerous volumes of poetry and prose during his lifetime and won numerous additional awards. The evening's host will be poet Tim Barnes, and featured poets include Steve Arndt, Gerry Foote, Jim Grabill, Diane Holland, Dan Skach-Mills and Tigard resident, Carolyn Moore. Dennis Schmidling, FWS board member, will also read. As your gift, you may bring along a favorite Stafford poem to read for the rest of the group.
